how to start a wedding/event planning business?
I have done an on-line training course to start my own business, however, I feel experience is a necessity. How do I become an intern for a local event planner so they could show me all the details (packages, pricing, etc.) Of course I want to be paid for my time and eventually open my own business. The closest planner in my area is about an hour away so I wouldn’t be a huge threat to their business by opening my own.
Congrats on joining the whole “be your own event/wedding boss” with the rest of us (that I know..lol)
Now…first thing, you don’t necessarily have to be an intern. Some may want to know if you have planned events previously and yes that is when you need to have some type of portfolio.
My best suggestion would be to look at signing up with various community committees (ie. the local hospital puts on a bake sale or some event, there’s a spot avail for a few hands on a large project etc.) and get involved. The more you get some work under your belt from a business standpoint, the better.
You can also look at starting your own business through having a few events in your home (like small dinner parties with favors), for a friend, a friend of friend (you get my point) and start showing your “training” paid off. And don’t hold it to just weddings, do birthdays, dinner parties, wedding anniversaries, holiday events.. oh the list goes on. The more folks who are close to you see you are serious, the more wod of mouth advertising (which is a lovely free thing) will take place & get you out there.
My short story, I had been doing events for over 10 years before getting my certification as a wedding coordinator & event planner. And now, its to the point I’m blessed to say it is expanding to another location outside of my hometown. So anything is possible.
The only key to this whole thing is: keep up with the training or the information through seminars, networking socials in your neighbourhood and that person who does it not to far from you. Heck, they might need a volunteer for a day and that would also be advantageous. Just don’t tell them you are their competition just yet.
